Dr. Cathleen Heffernan is a fellowship-trained breast imaging radiologist, who currently practices at East End Health & Imaging Center.
She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Biology with departmental honors from Hamilton College and her MD from New York University Grossman School of Medicine. She completed her diagnostic radiology residency at NYU Langone Medical Center, followed by a Women's Imaging Fellowship under the mentorship of Dr. Hildegard Toth.
Dr. Heffernan has developed innovative educational materials including a US-guided breast biopsy simulation training workshop and has served as a Mock Boards instructor for oral board preparation. Her research focuses on improving clinical outcomes in breast imaging and advancing women's roles in radiology leadership. Her notable 2021 publication examining the impact of COVID-19 on gender differences among female radiologists has been widely cited in medical literature. She has authored multiple peer-reviewed articles and has presented her research at national conferences including RSNA.
Dr. Heffernan demonstrates exceptional commitment to diversity, inclusion, and healthcare equity through her clinical work at Bellevue Hospital, serving underserved populations regardless of insurance status. As chair of the Metrics Sub-committee of the Women's Leadership Initiative at NYU, she has helped implement meaningful improvements in faculty diversity and retention.
Dr. Heffernan is passionate about providing compassionate, professional care to patients facing breast conditions, recognizing the challenges of a breast cancer diagnosis.
